STATEN ISLAND UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
BrainLab & Traumatic Brain Injury Facility

Built out-of-the-ground within SIUH’s new 7-story Medical Tower, the SIUH BrainLab is the first to be built in the United States, and only the Fifth installed in the world. The BrainLab System uses visually guided cameras and laser knives that are maneuvered remotely by computer through the patients body in order to perform complicated neurosurgical procedures. The visual input for these procedures is provided to the surgeon in real-time using the wide variety of diagnostic and imaging tools built into the walls of the BrainSuite.

The configuration of the various instruments and imaging systems in this efficiency-conscious operating room allow for intuitive technician interaction, and versatile control and visualization of all of the systems in the OR. With a direct data connection to the room's main imaging management system, new image data can be manipulated and cross-referenced instantly. The updated images are also transferred in real-time to the ceiling-mounted IGS system where the data is downloaded and is then registered in a variety of databases utilized to aid diagnosis and treatment adaptively throughout the course of a procedure.
High-end data interface is provided through a series of touch-screen monitors that comprise the “Brain Suite Data Billboard”. Here all visual data coming from the MRI, CT-scan, PET-scan, Spectroscope, microscope, or any other video source is displayed in a clear, multimedia format facilitating the workflow of the operation.
