Mount Sinai Medical Center
Martha Stewart’s Center for Living

The Martha Stewart Center for Living is a geriatric and adult development clinic.  The project is a 7,800 square foot interior fit-out for a state-of-the-art facility located within the Klingenstein Pavilion of the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.  A newly-designed stainless steel and glass entry awning gives it a distinct identity from the rest of the hospital.  The design of the Martha Stewart Center combines the simplicity of beautifully detailed materials and well-lit public spaces that flow into each other in a logical path of progression.

The effect is enhanced by the use of wooden wall panels, stone wainscots, and bases set off from each other by stainless steel, as well as stone floor tiles along the main corridors.  In the exam rooms, special lighting has been installed so that light does not shine directly into patients’ eyes while they are on the exam tables.
The soothing neutral colors for finishes were personally selected by Martha Stewart including stone flooring that minimizes dust and dirt.  Artwork on the walls and indirect lighting used to reduce glare and hot spots further increase the feeling of a non-clinical atmosphere.  The exam rooms are smaller, more intimate spaces located within easy access of nearby waiting areas to help patients with mobility needs.  It is these features that make the Martha Stewart Center for Living a warm and welcoming space that addresses the needs of both patients and staff.
