HOSPITAL FOR SPECIAL SURGERY
Post-Anesthesia Care Unit
This gut renovation of an existing medical floor consisted of medical services construction on multiple levels of a fully occupied and functioning hospital building. The scope of work included the basement installation of two MRI’s, one of which operates at 3 Tesla, and the other at 1.5 Tesla. Major project concerns included the required reconfiguration of the structural members in certain places within the renovated area. Structural steel elements were added to the buildings column layout and existing structural steel re-arranged to accommodate the delivery, placement and installation of the MRI magnets. A three-inch thick envelope of copper RF shielding was installed around the entire unit in order to contain the MRI emissions. Delivery of the two MRI magnets necessitated cutting a large hole in the building’s exterior envelope, this served as an entry point for the magnets and was located directly over the FDR Drive. Installation of the magnets was performed in such a manner that it did not interrupt the flow of traffic. Also within the scope was the forth floor construction of three new General Surgical Operation Rooms along with their associated infrastructure services. Adjacent to the fourth floor Operating Room’s a twenty bed PACU Recovery Unit with associated Nurses Station was built to support the Surgical staff. On the first floor of the same building, an additional PACU was built to increase service for the hospital’s existing Surgical Facilities. Additionally, the work required the behind-the-walls installation of a multi-level Linen Chute, serving all floors of the facility. |
