MOUNT SINAI MEDICAL CENTER
Center for Advanced Science & Medicine

The project consists of an approx. 160,000 sq ft., conversion of a former parking garage into clinical spaces and offices for various departments. The Center for Advanced Science & Medicine occupies eight stories and includes extensive mechanical spaces in the cellar and on the roof. Due to its previous incarnation as a parking garage, intensive structural redesign was required. Upon implementation the building was divided into West & East sides; creating a fluid, natural division of the building with the School of Medicine on the West side and Clinical spaces predominantly on the East side of the building.

The facility houses the following departments: Rehabilitation, IMA, Pulmonary, Podiatry, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Neurology, Radiology as well as several others, each featuring its own unique infrastructure. Special Equipment for the Rehabilitation, Ophthalmology, Scope Processing, Mammography, X-Ray & Hemo-Dialysis Departments as well as an Audiology Booth have been accommodated. Also housed in the Center are numerous Examination, Treatment & Phlebotomy Rooms and their associated support spaces, i.e. Staff Lounges, Soiled Hold, Clean Utility and Conference Rooms.

Architecturally, the main aesthetic effort was directed at creating a soothing environment by using carefully selected natural materials, such as Portuguese and Indiana Limestone, granite, White Oak wood, earth-toned Corian countertops and wooden grain millwork. The elegant Main Lobby features a stunning seven-story atrium with stone-clad piers, there are artfully applied images of nature throughout the Lobby area, notably the north Atrium wall; shown above left in daylight and below left at nighttime.
